Dunes of the Gran Desierto de Altar

This post is also available in: Español (Spanish)

It is the largest active dune field in North America and features the unusual star-shaped dunes.

There are five thousand kilometers of dunes that formed over time. According to the studies, all of these are sediments from the Colorado River of the Grand Canyon that were carried here.

The dream of every sand border is to go to the Great Altar Desert to descend through huge dunes in a practically lunar landscape. The highest in Mexico is known as “Duna la Reyna” reaching heights of more than 320 meters and is located within this region.
